CITY GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE
Japanese Day of Remembrance
A unified effort conveyed by the JAA and City of Los Santos

- AS PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION -
Los Santos, SA ~ Sunday, February 20th, 2022

Image

Today, we shed light on one of the darkest moments in our nation’s history. Eighty years ago, the United States began removing 120,000 Japanese Americans from their homes and forcing them into internment camps.

We must remind ourselves of the constant need to ensure the freedoms and rights of every American. We commemorate the brave men, women, and children who were unconscionably mistreated by the country they called home, and we renew our commitment to preventing such abuses.

We cannot erase our past, but we can strive to acknowledge, protect, and defend the rights of those facing injustice and discrimination, and ensure history does not repeat itself.

Based on then flimsy, and now fully disproved, claims of national security, the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans is now fully recognized for the racism that served as the foundation for the policy and has been repudiated by our government in the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988.

A decision motivated by discrimination and xenophobia, the internment of Japanese Americans was a betrayal of our most sacred values as a nation that we must never repeat. This stain on our history should remind us to always stand up for our fellow Americans, regardless of their national origin or immigration status, and protect the civil rights and liberties that we hold dear.

While we remember February 19 as the point in time when EO9066 was signed, we acknowledge that this was one point in a stream of policies intended to oppress and exploit minority communities.

Image

Despite these experiences, thousands of young Japanese-American men enlisted in the U.S. armed forces, bravely fighting to defend the nation that was abridging their own freedoms at home.

Nowhere was this better evidenced than with the exploits and wartime achievements of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 100th Infantry Battalion, and Military Intelligence Service. Victory in the war would have likely been significantly delayed without the participation of Japanese Americans in the war effort.

Yet back at home, the soldiers' families were being denied the very freedom for which so many of the soldiers themselves were laying down their lives.

We honor their sacrifice, as well as the resilience that made it possible for thousands of Japanese-American families to reclaim and rebuild their lives after the war.

We also remember our government’s capacity to apologize and seek to right a wrong. The passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 acknowledged the wrong and sought to provide reparations.

While no amount of money would truly and fully compensate incarcerees for their economic losses nor the emotional scars of trauma upon them and their families, the cost to the country affirmed the deep recognition that we as a nation had to share some of the pain that the Japanese American community had felt, to take responsibility.

Image

In addition, San Andreas itself was home to one of the most infamous of ten internment camps for Japanese Americans, Manzanar. It was also the first of all the camps to be established.

Located 230 miles north of where we stand, the first detainees to be placed in the camp were the very Japanese Americans who had been made to help build the camp itself. Ninety percent of those incarcerated there were from Little Tokyo, Los Santos.

Those detained endured subhuman conditions and treatment, simply for their heritage, and Little Tokyo as it was known shrank considerably during this time. Even gaining the nickname of “the Tokyo Strip” as it did so.

Even post-internment, as Japanese Americans returned to the city, many were unable to find employment or rebuild their lives. The stain of persecution lingered, leading many to homelessness and poverty.

The effect of these times continues to this day, and while we also celebrate our success in rebuilding a path to equality, much more work needs to be done.

A disproportionate amount of Japanese Americans still live below the poverty line, struggling with housing and equal opportunity in our city.

It is with this sense of recognizing our wrongs and seeking to make them right that we as citizens of Los Santos might continue to aspire to the formation of a more perfect union.

Therefore on this day, we ask that all Citizens of Los Santos join us in solemn remembrance of the issuance of Executive Order 9066 in 1942. We similarly ask that all the people commemorate the rescission of Executive Order 9066 by President Gerald R. Ford on this day in 1976.

Image

While the gathering included the remembrance of the legacy of Japanese American victims, not all was too gloomy. In fact, local Japanese Americans embraced this date with integrity and were more than happy to demonstrate what modern Little Tokyo has to offer in terms of the vast assortment of prospering businesses.

The City's gratitude goes towards the Japanese American Association as none of this would have occurred if it weren't for their contribution and the passion that they share in seeing improvements for Japanese American people that reside inside Los Santos. Unpretentiously, our gratitude also goes to all of those who came to show their support on the 19th of February. And together we hope to one day fully heal the scars left behind from darker times.

CITY GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE
Bark in the Park, an elated assembly

- AS PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION -
Los Santos, SA ~ Saturday, February 12th, 2022

Image

On February 11th at 19:00, the City of Los Santos and its citizens assembled to give significance to our faithful canine companions. Vinewood Hills Park provided everyone with the liberty of adventure and warm get-togethers.

The enthusiastic anticipation was met with an outburst of positive energy for all participants — where both humans and dogs alike wallowed in the opportunity of interaction harmoniously.

Image
Amity on first sight.

“It is really difficult not to cheer up, even after a hard day's work, when you are greeted with — often vocal — enthusiasm by a friendly dog."

It is long-established by now that dogs and humans hold a unique bond with one another. Scientific studies confirm that having a pet dog has many benefits. For instance, it makes the said person happy. A dog naturally produces positive vibes that affect us on a whole different level of emotions.

Throughout the history of mankind, dogs have always been our loyal companions. Aiding us in hunting, protection, and above all placing a smile on our faces after a tough and stressful day. Dogs truly are God's gift bestowed upon every human being, their trust and love that they express towards us are transcendent.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), an estimated 78 million dogs are owned as pets in the United States.

“One of the greatest gifts we receive from dogs is the tenderness they evoke in us."

Image

EXAMPLES OF HOW VALUABLE DOGS ARE

• Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets.
• Playing with a dog can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax.
• Heart attack patients with pets survive longer than those without.
• The companionship of a pet can also ease loneliness, and most dogs are a great stimulus for healthy exercise, which can substantially boost your mood.

When we interact with dogs, our oxytocin levels shoot up. Since this is the hormone largely responsible for social bonding, this hormonal “love injection” boosts our psychological well-being.

Moreover, dogs appear to reduce symptoms of depression and render people more resilient to stress. That is why dogs are often used as therapy animals.

HOW DOGS KEEP YOU IN GOOD HEALTH

Many studies have suggested that having dogs as pets is associated with better physical health. Analysis has shown that owning a dog reduces a person's risk of premature death by up to a third. However, the benefits may appear thanks to a series of factors related to lifestyle adjustments that people tend to make after they decide to adopt a canine friend.

What are these factors, you wonder? Physical activity and commitment! You are naturally required to take care of your pet dog, to equally love him just as how much your dog loves you! Tending to your pet dog is essential, it shouldn't be a chore. Whilst the responsibility on your back is substantially larger, that responsibility itself can work miracles on both yourself and your dog. Namely, your health condition improves as you take your dog out on a walk, be it once or twice a day. That itself is a major step forth in terms of your physical condition, let alone encouraging you to continue with physical activity almost spontaneously.

Adopting healthy lifestyle changes plays an important role in easing symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, bipolar disorder, and PTSD.

CARING FOR A PET CAN HELP YOU MAKE HEALTH LIFESTYLE CHANGES

• Increasing exercise.
• Providing companionship.
• Helping you meet new people.
• Reducing anxiety.
• Adding structure and routine to your day.
• Providing sensory stress relief.

If you made your decision about adopting a pet dog, do not hesitate! There are tons of these fluffy, adorable, and humble creatures out there that await your rescue TODAY!

CITY GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE
Brave the Shave, World Cancer Day 2022

- AS PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION -
Los Santos, SA ~ Saturday, February 5th, 2022

The City of Los Santos cohered with its citizens in commemorating World Cancer Day on the 4th of February, 2022.
“When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds, and diamonds are made under pressure.” - Peter Marshall
World Cancer Day 2022 is dedicated to the courage and accomplishments of people living with cancer and their families, as well as caregivers, health care providers, researchers, exponents, and other volunteers — and calls for everyone to join in helping to save lives from this disease.

The 2022 World Cancer Day efforts within Los Santos are led by the City's Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the University of Los Santos. The theme “Brave the Shave” encapsulates the extraordinary spirit, strength, and resolve to battle this illness through unity and love.

The City's agenda behind this charitable initiative is to spread the message of awareness against cancer — about its causes, symptoms, treatment, and precautions — through joyful and voluntary participation in shaving one's head. All of the cut hair will then be donated to cancer patients — for them to embellish their heads through wigs, hair extensions, and toupees in liberty and happiness.

In addition, the City is pleased to reveal the estimated number — the "Brave the Shave" initiative amassed an amount of $1.525.799 and all the donated funds will be sent to cancer research institutions and families that are tackling this tribulation.

The City's transparent summary of the donated sum, according to the analysis from the Office of City Treasurer, in its explicit form:

Image

The City Treasury will be donating an additional $474,201 atop, which then brings the final sum to a grand amount of $2.000.000.

Mayor of Los Santos, Marcus Cambridge, states:
“Through initiatives such as "Brave the Shave" and combined efforts from our beloved citizens of Los Santos, we are putting cancer at the center of attention with ambitious policy actions and research efforts – from prevention, via treatment, to survivorship — to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among our people and reduce cancer risks.”
The Mayor and the vast amount of citizens adventurously took participation in becoming coiffeurs as the event slowly took its course, with many more voluntarily taking part in this spirited strive. Suffice to say, they have had their hands occupied throughout the whole evening!

The City of Los Santos considers promoting local cooperation in healthcare and medical research to be an absolute priority. Assuring the physical and mental health of each individual is the first building block of a prosperous society. A sound mind in a sound body, unburdened by illness, is free to dream, to discover, to accomplish so much good for our citizens.

For that sole reason, the City commends YOU for your collective efforts and offers gratitude for fighting the good fights on this remarkable day.

CITY GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE
Opening of Charleston Street Apartment Complex

- AS PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION -
Los Santos, SA ~ Sunday, January 30th, 2022

On January 29th at 18:00, the City congregated to mark the official opening of the long-scheduled Charleston Street Project located on Charleston Street, in the Davis district.

The ceremony flowed in harmony, with many local residents occupying the main podium to witness Mayor's high-spirited speech. A substantial amount of citizens from other districts also showed their support by attending, which the City of Los Santos owes their gratitude to.

A segment from the Mayor's speech:
On behalf of the City, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the citizens of Los Santos, to a large extent for the trust and patience that they've had in seeing this project through with astounding success. We are appreciative that they have given their time, on which there is such constant pressure, to come here today and so acknowledge an important duty which we all share. The duty to offer both our efforts and our resources for the benefit of this magnificent city and the people within it.
The project took its initiative in early 2021, with a set deadline for Spring 2022, right after the demolition of the Davis Mega Mall. Following the new transition in the administration of the City, the project regained the initial resolution. With the initial budget at their disposal, a new construction contract was set in immediate motion. And a testimony itself that its delivery was adequately established is a considering fact that the project was finalized far earlier than it was originally intended.

The sheer amount of passion that was evident during the whole process serves as another allegation that it is within the City's strong interest to improve the quality of life for each of their beloved citizens, regardless of the district they reside in.

Charleston Street Apartment Complex now offers eighty suits across seven apartment blocks for Davis residents to call their new abodes. The commodities that each suit brings effectively bestows a plentiful amount of opportunities for families old and new to begin their new chapters in life. In addition, Charleston Street Park in its convenient proximity offers another form of entertainment for the youth. A safe haven for their innovative minds to develop and prepare for the future.

Another segment from the Mayor's speech:
If a person is enabled to buy or rent a reasonable roof over their head they will have been provided with the first ingredient of their self-respect. They will feel it worth working harder to have a little more to spend on food and clothing. If they have children, they will be more inclined to educate them and take proper care of their health. Perhaps more important than anything, their children will grow up against a secure background, with all that implies. By building new homes we lay the social foundation of people's betterment.
Lastly, we are happy to voice our sincerest gratitude towards Aurum Energy. Their express installments and unwavering ambition are one of the numerous reasons that the project was finished at such a rapid pace. And preserving through adversities as a team is the only strategy that the City relies upon. With such an agenda set, no task will ever be too complex for the ultimate goal of achieving splendors for its citizens.

Finalizing touch of the Mayor's speech:
Nothing is more fulfilling than seeing our hard-won contributions take actualization. And all those efforts are purely applied in service to the people.

Complete transcript of Mayor Cambridge's speech will be presented down below for a relaxing read.
[+] The transcript
Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished visitors, fellow colleagues, and citizens of Los Santos,

It gives me profound pleasure to be in the Davis district on this day and to cordially welcome all of you at the official opening of the Charleston Street Project which the City inaugurated in early 2021. I am delighted to be performing this ceremony in the presence of such an outstanding crowd.

As a Mayor of this City, I can confidently declare that the integrated measures that we all took so that this day comes to realization were not futile. The Charleston Street Apartment Complex offers 80 units for Davis residents to soon call their new homes. Modern yet affordable, as our initial goal was. We have also taken the necessary administrative precautions with the construction of the Charleston park, as our primary agenda is to have the neighborhood revitalized without neglecting the safety of its residents and future families that will develop here. These are just some of the promised commodities that the City offers, with many more plans being set afoot for the future.

I'd also want to accentuate the importance of improving the quality of life of this great city’s urban people who might otherwise see no glimmer of hope in their futures.

It is on these very principles that the City of Los Santos was founded. The buildings we now see before us are one of many completed results, challenges, and projects that we regularly undergo in hope of accomplishing the ultimate end goal.

Lastly, I must pay a warm tribute towards the company we're all well acquainted with - Aurum Energy. The credit for the final touch before completion of the Charleston Street Apartment Complex goes entirely in their direction. If Los Santos City Government and State Government are the foundation upon which all these projects come into manifestation, Aurum Energy is the one to thank for conveniently aiding the aforementioned in providing the City with a clean and sustainable form of energy, necessary installments, and many more things that they have in their selective arsenal. Their considerate views not only help the environment but are a solid testimony that Aurum Energy is a company every citizen of Los Santos and San Andreas can rely upon. And that truly is a blessing in disguise.

And of course, I wish to personally thank our local Police Department for assisting us! They put their own lives in danger to make the City a better and a safer place for all of us!

Nothing is more fulfilling than seeing our hard-won contributions take actualization. And all those efforts are purely applied in service to the people.

Thank you all once again for being here with us today. I am rather hopeful that this is just one of many more successful projects that we'll push through. Davis residents definitely have something to look forward to, we have granted them a new foundation upon which they can now build their new families.

And with that, I will take my leave, gratitude for your time and for showing your tremendous support for being here.
