The Department of Public Works offers residents the chance to participate in a ride-along with a Public Works employee, whether that is a Technician, Parking Enforcer, or an Inspector. During the ride-along, you will be given a brief glimpse of the daily duties of a Public Works employee of the City Government. You are expected to follow some regulations while participating.
- The ride-along is for observation only and participants should not become involved in or interfere with any situation physically.
- Participants will not be allowed to carry a weapon while on a ride-along, despite current concealed weapon laws.
- Ride-along permission will not be granted if the applicant has a criminal record.
- Cameras, tape recorders and phones are permitted while the ride-along takes place.
- Ride-along participants will be allowed to observe as much of any situation as is possible, consistent with their safety; they may interact with the Public Works employee at all times as long as the employee is responding.
- The Public Works employee is entitled to terminate the ride-along if the participant fails to follow the regulations or is acting in a manner inconsistent with the best interests of the City Government.
- The participant may request that the ride be terminated at any time. The participant will be returned to the Public Works Headquarters as soon as it is deemed safe by the employee.
- The participant may only go on ride-alongs within their specified choice.
- The participant accepts and understands the risks and must sign the liability waiver.
- The applicant shall be at least eighteen years of age at the time of submitting a request.
- Applicants shall read and understand all of the ride-along regulations listed above.
STEP I. PRELIMINARY RIDE-ALONG APPLICATION – This is the first step in applying for a ride-along. The primary objective of this application is to assess the applicant's desire and background.
STEP II. BACKGROUND CHECK – Upon submitting your application, Public Works office personnel will verify whether the information contained within is truthful. By applying, you agree that your personal information which includes your full name, legal address, driving license, and criminal record will be subject to review by the City.
STEP III. APPROVAL – After successfully passing the first two steps, you will be contacted via email and invited to call the City Government's landline to set up a ride-along day with one of the employees.
